Tour news

Last week saw the first tournament of the desert swing on the European Tour held at Abu Dhabi G.C. The field was a strong one including world number 1 Jordan Spieth and the 3rd ranked player in the world Rory McIlroy. The first 2 days was set up for fantastic viewing with McIlroy, Spieth and Fowler paired together. After the first two rounds McIlroy was two shots backs from Englishman Andy Sullivan and 5 clear of Spieth. The third round saw McIlroy, Sullivan and Byrson Dechambeau (Amateur) in the last group. For any of you that don't know who this Byrson kid is he's a 22 year old American amateur who won the US Amateur Championship last year. We knows he's a top class player after shooting 64 in the first round but what he said in his interview before his 3rd round was crazy. He was asked if playing with Rory and Andy was going to be exciting and if he was nervous and his reply was no it's just another normal round of golf!! I think he may of regretted that reply to the media have shooting 78 third round and eventually finishing 54th! All of his irons had the same lie and they were all the same shaft length as his 7 iron, bizarre!

The eventual winner was American Rickie Fowler winning by 1 shot from Thomas Pieters. Rickie holed out for an eagle 3 on the par five 8th which seemed to prove vital in his victory over the Belgian. Rory finished 3rd falling just short once again. He has never won this tournament but has finished top 3 four times out of the last five times he played in it!

Next week sees the second event of the dessert swing at Doha G.C for the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters. Branden Grace won this event last year and I can't see him being far away this time. My pick though is Joost Luiten.

Rule of the week

Below was last week's rule. The correct answer was B

Explanation: As a single act resulted in two rules being breached (Rule 13-4 and Rule 18-2), in equity (Rule 1-4), a single penalty is applied. Therefore, the competitor incurs a two stroke penalty under Rule 13-4 and the ball must be replaced (Rule 18-2).

New rule of the week

In stroke play, a competitor's ball lies on the putting green. Before playing his next stroke he taps down spike marks in the vicinity of the hole. What is the ruling?

A - There is no penalty.
B - The competitor incurs a penalty of two strokes.
C - The competitor incurs a penalty of two strokes if the act assists with his subsequent play of the hole.

Course improvement projects

Following feedback from the membership and from our own assessment of the golf course we will be undertaking a number of improvement projects over the forthcoming weeks. This work will enhance both the playability and the aesthetics of the golf course.

Tees: Several tees have become uneven over time so we will be addressing this by removing the existing turf, levelling the rootzone and finally laying new fescue/rye grass turf. The tees we will be levelling are the 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th and 15th.

Bunkers: The condition of the bunkers is something we want to improve so along with an ongoing annual maintenance programme we will be working on a number of individual bunkers to further improve them. This work will include re-shaping/contouring, adding drainage, reducing in size and refreshing the existing sand. In certain areas we will be removing bunkers altogether. Some of the bunkers we are looking at are the greenside bunkers on the 11th, 15th and 17th and the left hand greenside bunkers on both the 10th and 16th.

Long rough: We have already started work on the long rough by cutting and collecting the clippings in front of tees and this will continue in selected other areas as we head into spring. The aim of this work is to thin out the grass and remove the broader leaf grasses that hinder play. These areas will also be sprayed with a product that selectively kills the broad leaf grasses and thus speeds up the process.

Tree planting: As well as moving/re-locating some of our semi-mature trees we will be planting pine trees in a number of areas across the golf course.

Tip of the week

Tom's Tips

Improve your accuracy -

Place a coin on the ground and position four balls at equal distances away around the coin at approximately 2 feet. Putt the first of the balls aiming to hit the coin. If the ball strikes the coin move onto the next ball and so on completing the four shot cycle.

If you miss the coin re-position your balls and start over again. Once you can complete the challenge of hitting four putts in a row reset the balls but this time move back to a three foot distance.

Once again completed move another foot further back from the coin. This drill is great to practice in the comfort of your own home on those wet winter days.

Have a great weekend, Dave
